Mission

Build homes in Tijuana for families who typically live in a shack with a dirt floor and a plastic tarp for a roof. Workers in these colonias typically make $45 to $75 a week, if they can find full-time work. The family pays a government agency about $100 per month for the land alone. Since the building trip costs approximately $3,500 it is nearly impossible for them to afford the items necessary to build their own house.

51 houses have been built in a community in Tijuana over the past 10 years.

There are a wide variety of tasks to be done, ranging from arranging lunch, helping with transportation and volunteers, job-site assistance, woodcutting, assembly, painting, pounding nails and everything else that goes into building a house. We could use your help.

Events

For every house we build (about 5 in 2006) we spend one day in Mexico. The week before we spend a day on the church grounds preparing all the materials for the following weekend.

In 2007 one house was built at the end of June. Because of various difficulties, house building in Tijuana has been put on hold. Instead, volunteers are encouraged to participate in remodeling houses in downtown San Diego for Rebuilding Together and to help the San Diego Habitat for Humanity build houses.

This year, 2008, we are helping to remodel the Chula Vista home of an elderly lady who cannot do the work herself. The work we are doing will include painting, landscaping, building a fence, cleanup, and minor repairs. No experience is necessary. This is a one day event that will be held on Saturday April 19. Lunch will be provided.
